The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story

Throughout this cartoon adventure for preteens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting baby teeth of slumbering children and placing gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

The stage is set for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are estranged from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be entitled types, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and that need is met by some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

You won’t find all that many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds view these days in lieu of Twilight. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
