Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
